Carnegie Mellon is a national research university with approximately 7,500 students and 3,000 faculty research staff. The university was producing massive amounts of paper and the workflow needed to change from hardcopy to a digital workflow. They wanted to be able to add OCR to the scanning process to make scanned documents more useful. They also needed a way to effectively manage the growing number of digital documents
Tom Joyce the Senior Software Engineer, worked with the sales representative to structure a solution that would meet the University's wide variety of needs. Many of the departments have Canon departmental photocopiers and the idea was to equip them with the eCOPY Suite and to use the Fortis Connector for eCopy ShareScan to add paper documents to their document repository.
The office of Sponsored Projects uses eCopy to securely and effectively manage correspondance, contracts, and proposals associated with grants and contracts. Human Resources uses eCopy to digitise and manage employement documentation, cv's and benefit forms. The Risk Management department uses eCopy to scan all insurance certificates and policies into the University's document managment system. The Computing and Information Services department uses eCopy as an effective way of sharing design specifications with its internal customers.
